Bitumen, vision, and the heritage: the roots of Alma Petroli

Founded in 1957 and operational since 1960, Alma Petroli has always been dedicated to producing road, industrial, and specialty bitumens.
It processes 550,000 tons of raw materials, including crude oil and heavy semi-finished products, annually.

The refinery is located in the heart of Ravenna’s industrial district, with direct access to the canal port and own logistics facilities for both maritime and land transport.
The company’s plants, facilities, and assets are designed, managed, and developed to ensure the highest level of flexibility in serving the bitumen markets.
Thanks to investments in its production units and human resources, the company has evolved and continues to evolve today.
These investments aim to steadily build client loyalty and strengthen partnerships. These include processing agreements with some of the sector’s major players, attesting to the high level of service provided.

Today, Alma Petroli is a European leader in the production of high-quality bitumen, with a tailor-made business model and standards of excellence that set it apart in terms of Safety and Environmental responsibility.

1956

In July 1956, the Ravenna Chamber of Commerce registered the founding of Società Petrolifera Adriatica Romagnola di Serena Monghini & C., with registration number 32461.

1957

The company was based in the coastal city of Ravenna and took the name Alma (Azienda di Lavorazione di Minerali e Affini, or Minerals and Related Materials Processing Company) in 1957.

1960

In 1960, Alma Petroli was granted Ministerial concession to establish “a coastal industrial plant for the annual processing of 50,000 tons of crude oil distillation residues”. This permit marked the beginning of the company’s history.

1970

Innovation has always been the most cherished value at Alma Petroli. In 1970, the company invested in the first bitumen oxidation plant – an absolute breakthrough for Italy.

1988

In 1988, Alma Petroli acquired a 230-meter terminal capable of mooring high-tonnage ships.

1990

Bitumen became Alma Petroli’s core business in the early decades of its history. The objectives were clear: consolidate a market niche, carry out all specific processing of the material, and oversee the project’s growth with foresight.

1990 • 2000

From 1990 to 2000, the total Italian bitumen market did not exceed 2.4 million tons of processed product per year. Alma Petroli produced about 7.5% of the national demand.

2022

The new Fastdraining® modified bitumen production plant has been in operation since July 2022. At the core lie the quality of Alma Petroli’s bitumen, years of research, and substantial investment.
